The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
